In 1900/01 the manufacturing capacity of these mills consisted of 315,000 spindles and 15340 looms. They employed over 110 thousand workers and consumed about 40 percent of the total crop. Meanwhile demand from Dundee mills increased and by 1896/97 jute acreage expanded to million acres from a meagre million acres in 1876/77.

Feb 03, 2017 · As many as 28 jute mills have shut down during 201516, as against 18 in the previous fiscal, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Of the 28 private and public sector jute mills that closed, 17 were in West Bengal (up from 10 in FY15) while six were loed in Andhra Pradesh, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani said.
